How many widgets are available and where are they displayed?

Frequently Bought Together started in 2017 as a product page widget, and for years that was the only place it could be displayed. That is no longer the case: the app now offers three different widgets, one for each key step of the purchase, and they can run at the same time.

  • Product page widget — the classic one, available on every plan.
  • Cart page widget — a second chance to cross-sell, available on the Professional plan.
  • Checkout widget — the last step before payment, available on the Professional plan for Shopify Plus stores.

Each widget has its own switch, its own position and its own recommendations, so you can enable one, two, or all three of them. Below you will find what each one does and where it is configured.

Product page widget

This is the original widget, the one that shows the product the customer is looking at next to the products that are usually bought with it, each one with its checkbox, and a total that can be added to the cart in a single click.

  • Available on: every plan, including Starter.
  • Recommendations: manual bundles, automatic recommendations, global recommendations and random recommendations.
  • Discounts: yes, this is the widget where the bundle discounts are built and displayed.
  • Position: from Product page position, either by placing the app block yourself in the theme editor or by pointing the widget to a CSS selector. You can even place it differently on desktop and mobile.
  • Switch: Product pages widget, on the app home page.

Cart page widget

The cart page widget suggests products while the customer is reviewing the cart, right before heading to the checkout. There is no current product on that page, so it does not build recommendations around one product the way the product page widget does.

  • Available on: the Professional plan.
  • Recommendations: global and random recommendations. Manual bundles and automatic recommendations are not taken into account in the cart page widget.
  • Discounts: the global discount applies here too, so a bundle added from the cart page gets the same discount as one added from a product page. Individual bundle discounts do not, since manual bundles are not used in this widget.
  • Position: from Cart page position. We recommend adding the app block from the Shopify theme editor, which gives you full control over the exact placement; you can also point the widget to a CSS selector of your cart page.
  • Switch: Cart page widget, on the app home page.

There is a single Visual styles section in the app, so the cart page widget follows the same styles you have already configured for the product page one.

Checkout widget

The checkout widget is a Shopify checkout extension: it shows recommendations inside the checkout itself, normally in the order summary, so customers can still add one more product before paying.

  • Available on: the Professional plan, and only on Shopify Plus stores. This is a Shopify restriction: checkout extensions are not allowed on other plans.
  • Position: from your Shopify admin, in the Checkout and customer accounts editor, adding the Frequently Bought Together block to a section (we suggest the Order summary one). See How to add a checkout extension for the step by step.
  • Texts: the block title and the add to cart button text are configured in that same checkout editor.
  • Switch: the extension is enabled by adding it in the checkout editor. Keep in mind that, once configured, it will be shown even when the app is disabled.

Which one should I enable?

They are not alternatives, they complement each other: the product page widget builds the bundle, the cart page widget catches what the customer forgot, and the checkout widget adds a last impulse purchase. If your plan allows it, the usual recommendation is to enable all of them.
